Wow!

Thank you all so much for the wonderful advice, you don't know how much of a help it has been. I really don't know anyone who has a baby in the last 10 years, so this advice is awesome! Ok, my next set of questions is concerning diapers...Does it really matter what brand I get or is there any specific brand that is better than the others. What about store brands? Also, what about a "Diaper Genie" worth it or not?

I think a diaper pail is a necessity. I prefer the diaper champ because it uses tall kitchen bags and doesn't need special refills like the diaper genie.

I used disposables for the first three months, and now I use cloth and only 'sposies when we travel. Brands do matter, but your baby's shape determines a lot. My daughter does best in Luvs, and blows out white cloud and dribottoms and huggies more frequently and I hate the perfumey smell of pampers. I also have had bad experiences with gel beads being stuck to my daughter with some brands. I love using cloth, by the way, and will be diapering two in cloth this winter.

Sarah and I actually use the diaper genie - You better have something of the sort if your going to use good ol Huggies or any other thing that is going to hand around for more than an hour.

We've never been brave enough to use the cloth - It wasnt even an option for me. I mean, my stomach is just way to weak! I was always that kid on the back of the bus who could throw up just becuase some kid on the front of the bus was dry heaving.

    Robert-
Cloth nowadays is really easy. We even have a sprayer that looks like the one at the kitchen sink that hooks up to our toliet (wiht no real plumbing knowledge required) that we rinse diapers with. No dunking!

    Kristen,

Nowadays? Hmm, call me simple but a turd in a cloth is a turd in a cloth today just as it was 20 years ago - no matter how sophisticated the spray devices have become!

Ok, my opinion for what it is worth. Baby #1 got the diaper genie. Used it, liked it, but Kristen is right. You have to get the specific refills and you have to dump it. It gets pretty stinky up inside there. Baby #2 - I just drop the diapers in a trash can. Our trash goes out daily anyway so it doesn't have time to get too stinky. Breast fed babies tend to not have as bad a smelling poop until they are moved on to solids. Then it gets stinky. But I learned from a friend to just wrap the stinky ones in a plastic grocery bag really tight and dispose of them in the garbage. If you are dumping your garbage daily then it isn't a big deal. Diaper Genie is a good item, but not a necessity.

I used Dry Bottoms with Leah (from Wal-Mart) but I don't think they are carrying them anymore. Luvs are ok. Pampers Swaddlers are better. Huggies in my opinion are by far the best. Great fit but expensive. Reasonable if you can get them in bulk at a Sam's Club or something like that. - Sarah Nash
